Caring for a newborn, not to mention three other children, dedicating her work life to her local community as a migrant clinician, all while working toward a PhD in nursing? Just a day in the life for Elizabeth Rios, NP, whose selection as one of the 30 Clinicians Making a Difference was celebrated in the Northwest Herald [3], her local paper in Harvard, Il. In the news article, Rios emphasized the importance of cultural competence and shared language, to build trust and lasting relationships between the practitioner and patient. The article also mentions her focus on diabetes care in the Mexican-American population.
Both themes were present in her profile article as well, where Rios spoke of her path to her present-day position at Community Health Partnership of Illinois. “My interest is in diabetes type II prevention in the childbearing Mexican-American population, especially those with a low acculturation in the US,” she said in the article. “I think in the future, just like they are helping me, I hope I will be able to help them through research and help prevent … the incidence of type II diabetes in the Mexican-American population.” Read Rios’s full profile here [4].
