The final days of harvest have arrived for much of the country. The last sugar beets are being pulled out of the ground in North Dakota; apple harvest has a few more weeks in New York State. In California, the opposite is true. Slightly cooler weather in the Central Valley means farms are green with young plants to fill America’s plates through the winter. As many migrant farmworkers shift from one region to another to secure work, we take a look at the many issues that may affect their health and the health of other mobile and underserved workers in the US and around the world. Here are the top five recommendations from Migrant Clinicians Network’s staff this week. What did you see that impacts mobile workers?
1. Amy, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health, sent along this “nice article featuring Dr. Rodriguez [2] from a Center of Excellence for Environmental and Occupational Health partner in Puerto Rico.” The Spanish-language article covers pesticide use and risks for farmers and the community in Puerto Rico.
2. Ileana, Senior Advisor for Scientific and Strategic Planning, noted the National Diabetes Education Program’s October 27th webinar, Double Trouble: The Surprising Connection Between Diabetes and Tuberculosis and Opportunities for Meaningful Collaboration [3].
3. Tiffy, Communications and Graphic Designer, forwarded on this NBC article about National Latino AIDS Awareness Day [4], featuring a very sweet recounting of a mother’s reaction to her son’s HIV diagnosis.
4. Claire, Writer and Editor, read about New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s new measures [5] aimed at reducing worker exploitation, a continuation of the governor’s efforts to curb abuse in the nail salon industry. His new measures expand the reach into a number of other industries where workers are “frequent victims of wage theft and are often subjected to unsafe or unsanitary working conditions.” His release featured video stories of workers.
5. Jillian Hopewell, Director of Education and Professional Development, noted that Eastern Shore Rural Health has a job opening [6] for Outreach Program Manager.
