Diabetes is a major public health problem affecting more than 30 million Americans, with prevalence (diagnosed and undiagnosed) for Asian Americans ranking the highest when compared to other racial/ethnic groups. Studies have shown that standard body mass index (BMI) cut point of 25 is inappropriate for defining diabetes risk in Asian Americans. Consequently, the American Diabetes Association, National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have acknowledged the need to screen Asian Americans at a BMI cut point of 23 to identify those with or at risk for future diabetes.
