Prior to leading CMS, he served as President of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), where he led the successful 100,000 Lives Campaign that dramatically reduced preventable mortality in American health care. Under his leadership, IHI recruited and partnered with more than 3,000 hospitals across the country to adopt and implement proven best practices to reducing unnecessary death. In 18 short months, an estimated 122,300 lives were saved. He has also launched the Protecting 5 Million Lives From Harm campaign to reduce preventable harm from surgical complications, MRSA infections, pressure ulcers and other avoidable risks.
