Wow, we’ve had a very busy week here at Migrant Clinicians Network. We published an Op-Ed in the Sacramento Bee [2] in honor of World TB Day, and we launched 30 Clinicians Making a Difference [3], to celebrate our 30th anniversary, and to coincide with Farmworker Awareness Week… But there’s still so much more! Here are some other great pieces -- news articles, new resources, policy updates, and professional opportunities -- that we’d like to share with you. Have a great weekend!
Ed, our Chief Medical Officer, sent to our Health Network associates this web course [4] from the CDC entitled, “TB 101 para trabajadores de la salud,” a Spanish-language translation of the CDC’s TB 101 for Health Care Workers online course.
Amy, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health, sent along this article [5] about the announcement by the International Agency for Research on Cancer that glyphosate, the active ingredient in the weedkiller Round Up, has been listed as a probable carcinogen. Kerry, Environmental and Occupational Health Program Associate, followed it up with another article, which starts out, “This has not been a good week for glyphosate [6].” It goes on to detail a study linking glyphosate and two other widely-used pesticides -- 2,4-D and dicamba -- to antibiotic resistance, which has widespread implications on backyard gardeners, farmworkers, and bees.Hugo, from our Board of Directors, forwarded on this perspective paper, entitled “Health Care for Immigrants -- Implications of Obama’s Executive Action [7],” published in the 3/26/15 version of the New England Journal of Medicine.
Tiffy, our graphic designer, found this “amazing data visualization [8] of 200 years of U.S. immigration.”
Jillian, Director of Education and Professional Development, noted Farmworker Justice’s weekly immigration update [9], which you can receive in your inbox [10] or view on their blog [9].
Know someone who wants to get into outreach? Ricardo, Health Network Manager, saw that Health Network partners Maine Migrant Health Program has posted about a new position [11] as part of their Outreach Team.
Our CEO Karen shared a news update [12] on the “fiscal cliff.”Candace, Specialist in Clinical Systems and Women’s Health, offered a few great resources, as she does every week. She noted that the NURSE Corps Scholarship Program [13] application cycle is now open and will close on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 7:30pm, ET. This Program assists students completing their nursing education by paying tuition, fees, other education costs, while providing a monthly living stipend.
Candace also sent on a press release [14] from the International Council of Nurses for World TB Day -- we really enjoyed the fabulous photos of TB nurses from around the world.
Elisa, Continuing Education Assistant, put up a new resource on our resources page, an Oral Health Toolkit [15] from the Oral Health Nursing Education and Practice program
Hope these links are a great start to your weekend. Don’t forget to check back often for more blog posts.
