The intersection of poverty, migration and health creates a unique set of behavioral health issues that are often exacerbated by exposure to trauma. This session will review the concept of trauma informed care to promote integrated behavioral health practices in primary care which adress the complex social, cultural, economicm and justice factors that contribute to disease burden. To effectively address behavioral health issues for migrants requires both astute observation and gentel questioning on the part of the clinician. For many migrants, primary care is the only source of behavioral health services. Recognition of behavioral health concerns may be complicated when patients somaticize their symptoms of depression or anxiety. However, when done effectively, treating behavioral health problems in primary care present opportunities for early intervention and prevention of disabling medical and behavioral health conditions. This session will provide participants with new ways of thinking about trauma, behavioral health, and possible interventions.
