This week’s Five on Friday exposes the many fronts on which the struggle for migrant justice is fought: in detention centers, in health centers, in government offices. Here are the top five recommendations from Migrant Clinicians Network’s staff. What did you see this week that impacts mobile workers?
1. Del, Director of International Projects, Research, and Development: Today, the detention facilities in Karnes City and Dilley reach their deadline imposed by a federal judge to release the women and children held there. The facilities have responded by applying for child care licenses [2] from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
2. Del also noted that on Wednesday, Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro introduced legislation [3] to remove language characterizing immigrants as “aliens” from federal law.
3. Charlotte, Development Manager, saw this article about the ongoing issue of immigrant birth rights in Texas [4].
4. Ricardo, Health Network Manager, read this article on Social Security for farmworkers [5] in New Mexico: "Sixty-six-year-old Antonio Zubia Hernandez worked for 29 years on farms but only receives $338 in Social Security benefits and a couple hundred more in Supplementary Security Income and food stamps each month."
5. Theressa, Training and Technical Assistance Coordinator, recommends a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) webinar in Spanish [6] overviewing bilingual Marketplace enrollment and outreach resources available to the Latino community, on October 26th at 4pm ET.
