It’s been a busy week in the world of migrant health. Here are a few news pieces that caught the eye of MCN’s staff:
- Amy, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health: “Immigrants are an important part of the poultry labor force. Check out this new Oxfam report. [2]”
- Candace,Specialist in Clinical Systems & Women’s Health, quoted from Audit: Children Working on North Carolina Tobacco Farms [3], on an audit that found that “40 percent of farms surveyed employing minors were not complying with federal law. In addition, a portion of those minors was performing hazardous work.”
- Del, Director of International Projects, Research, and Development, shared the Department of Health and Human Services announcement of a final rule requiring nondiscriminatory practices [4] in health care under the ACA.
- Paul, Finance Associate, offered up this article on the future of 3D printing to “develop cheaper and more democratic medicine [5], particularly for developing parts of the world.”
- Kerry, Environmental and Occupational Health Program Manager, sent us the following: “New York State is renouncing a loophole in federal labor laws that left farmworkers unable to organize without threat of retaliation. Governor Andrew Cuomo said [6], ‘We will not tolerate the abuse or exploitation of workers in any industry. This clear and undeniable injustice must be corrected.’”
