It’s mid-August, and harvests are in full swing across the country. In the offices of Migrant Clinicians Network, we have been sharing a number of interesting articles and resources that we’d like to share with you. Here’s this week’s Five on Friday:
- Alma, Senior Program Manager of Environmental and Occupational Health, recommends HealthyPeople.gov’s series of infographics on the social determinants of health [2]. They release a new one each month. Here’s the August infographic about on-time high school graduation rates [3].
- Alma also sent along “Sarbanand Farm Workers Protest After Employee Death [4],” a rundown of events and perspectives so far on the death of a 28-year-old H2A worker in Washington State last weekend.
- Candace, Specialist in Clinical Systems and Women’s Health: “Though not health related, this funding opportunity might be of interest to our constituents:” The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) seeks pre-applications for direct loans and grants [5] to build rental housing and related facilities for domestic farm laborers on terms that allow for rents affordable to lower-income tenants.
- Amy, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health, recommended this recent New York Times article on climate change an occupational hazard [6] and the growth of the environmental justice movement.
- Jessica sent a few articles on a growing concern which is being reported across the country: farms need more workers. The LA Times ran an article on the topic, entitled, “To keep crops from rotting in the field, farmers say they need Trump to let in more temporary workers [7].”
