This week, our wonderful Chief Medical Officer, Laszlo Madaras, MD, MPH, gained yet another set of letters after his name: FAAFP, as he has now become a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Congratulations, Laz! Here are some pieces we shared this week at MCN that we’d like to share with you:
Amy shared “Public Health Experts Say the Pandemic Is Exactly Why Protests Must Continue [2],” and said, “As we watch in horror the impacts of COVID-19 and its toll on Latinx and Black communities -- both health and economic -- and racial violence and the ongoing protests, this letter is an important response and worth the read."
Jillian offered up a must-read article from Salon.com: “Farmworkers Are Dying, COVID-19 Cases Are Spiking, and the Food System is in Peril: Agricultural Workers in One Florida Town Have What May Be One of the Highest Coronavirus Infection Rates [3].”
Alma forwarded the International Labor Organization’s latest guide for preventing COVID-19 among agricultural workers, presently only available in Spanish: “OIT lanza guía para prevenir COVID-19 en el sector agrícola [4]." Alma also shared the Vox video, “How Coronavirus Spreads Outdoors vs. Indoors [5].”
Laz shared two articles on COVID-19 that help explain why patients suspected of having COVID-19 are often given blood thinners when admitted to the hospital: “Coronavirus May Be a Blood Vessel Disease, Which Explains Everything [6],” and “COVID-19 Research: Postoperative Death, Pulmonary Embolism [7].”
Weekly Win: Claire shared, “These Young Latino Professionals Provide South Jersey Farmworkers ‘a Voice to Help Them Out of the Shadows.’ [8]”
Have a safe and healthy weekend.
