Diabetes affects more than 30 million people in the United States. Multi-tiered efforts to prevent, treat and manage diabetes are critical in reducing the burden of diabetes, particularly for medically underserved racial and ethnic minority populations. In addition to higher prevalence, ethnic and racial minority patients with diabetes have higher mortality and higher rates of diabetic complications.

As a rapidly growing and diverse population, AA&NHPIs face unique and significant social, emotional, and physical health burdens due to the deficits they experience related to the social determinants of health (SDH) such as poverty level, limited English proficiency, education, and health insurance status.

The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provides comprehensive health insurance for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) kids. Along with Medicaid, CHIP covers about 25 percent of AAPI kids nationwide, and allows health centers and other pediatric providers to serve patients with flexible and kid-focused care. Additionally, in some states, CHIP covers Lawful Permanent Resident children under the 5-year bar, allowing for essential access for immigrant families.
