On Tuesday, MCN’s Juliana Simmons, MSPH, CHES, Environmental and Occupational Health Program Manager, attended a meeting hosted by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Maryland Chapter and the Chesapeake Physicians for Social Responsibility.
A presentation on the chronic effects of pediatric pesticide exposures by professor James Roberts, MD, MPH, FAAP was the highlight of the evening. Dr. Roberts is based at the Medical University of South Carolina and is a clinician partner of MCN.
Following the presentation, Juliana participated in a panel discussion alongside Dr. Lorne Garrettson, Professor Emeritus at Emory University, and Dr. Jerry Paulson, medical director for the Pediatric Environmental Health Speciality Unit Program Eastern Office, consultant to the Mid-Atlantic Center for Children’s Health and the Environment, and Professor Emeritus of the George Washington University Schools of Medicine and Public Health.
The questions asked of the panel were suggestive of the growing interest in environmental health among clinicians. Panelists fielded questions regarding populations most at risk of pesticide exposure and recent legislation to protect against exposures. Panelists also provided guidance on where to find relevant resources. “At this event, we were able to showcase what MCN’s Environmental and Occupational Health team does best: connecting clinicians with resources to assist them in better recognizing and managing pesticide poisonings in practice,” noted Simmons.
