It’s back-to-school time! Two of our MCNers are away this week, dropping their children off at college for the first time. Many of us, however, still think of those full-grown college freshmen as youngsters in the MCN Austin office! How time flies. Best of luck to Ben and Nathaniel! Whether packing a PB&J in a Minion backpack, figuring out the bus schedule, or trying to find a place that sells those odd extra-long twin bed sheets, parents across the country are helping their students settle into the new autumn rhythms. If you have a few moments to spare, here are some reads on health justice, recommended from MCN staff.
- Amy, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health: “Here's an interesting article about two pregnant women, one a working for the CIA and one working for Chipotle, who won some interesting cases. Two really different types of workers.”
- Claire, Writer and Editor, recommends a study that concludes that race and ethnicity affect children’s access to mental health care. From the article: "One of the study’s clear messages, argued Woolhandler, is that racial minorities received markedly less care — regardless of socioeconomic or health status. The gap suggests a targeted intervention is needed."
- Candace, Specialist in Clinical Systems and Women’s Health, shared this disturbing development in the Zika story -- the possibility of late-onset microcephaly.
- Ricardo, Health Network Manager, pulled out this quote from an article on Global Migration’s Rapid Rise: "Migration is not a free-standing phenomenon. It is tied inextricably to wider forces: economics, political stability, policy decisions, and climate change, among others. As these forces change, so will the volume and direction of people."
- Karen, Chief Executive Officer, asks clinicians to pledge to help end the opiod crisis, at www.TurnTheTideRx.org/join.
Have a safe and healthy weekend!
