MCN Five on Friday

Migration continues to be above-the-fold news. Recent reports at the US-Mexico border fortify earlier speculations that 2016 will post greater migration attempts than even 2014, as Central American gang violence and political instability drive families north. Meanwhile, European migration has tapered, likely as a result of the EU-Turkey agreement. Still, 333,000 people attempted the harrowing journey to reach Europe, down from over 728,000 by this time last year. And, despite the lower overall numbers, 2016 is the deadliest on record for migrants in the Mediterranean. Our staff is hard at work on the urgent issue of migrant health; here are a few pieces that we read this week, that we wished to pass on to you.

  1. Karen, CEO, shared the US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics press release on new 2015 data on occupational injuries and illnesses.

  2. Jessica, Grant Writer, sent in an article on migrant women giving birth in Greece, whose babies’ immigration status are ‘in limbo’

  3. Ileana, Senior Advisor for Scientific and Strategic Planning, sent along Diabetes HealthSense, a website full of resources for diabetics from the National Diabetes Education Program.

  4. Alma, Senior Program Manager of Environmental and Occupational Health, shared “Top 10 OSHA Citations of 2016: A Starting Point for Workplace Safety,” on the US Department of Labor blog. (Who knew they had a blog?)

  5. Claire, Writer and Editor, sent out the Guardian article: “Hundreds dead as boats sink off Libya.

Have a safe and healthy Halloween weekend.
