Today is the final day of National Farm Safety and Health Week. Agricultural workers face some of the most dangerous workplaces in the country, but clinicians can step up and provide information and resources to help agricultural workers stay safe on the job. Check out some of the great resources from the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center, including their Farm Safety Checklist and their resource database. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has a number of stellar resources to lean on, including their Pesticide Illness and Injury Surveillance page. Here on MCN’s website, you’ll find our Pesticide Exposure Reporting Map, popular downloadable bilingual comics for agricultural workers, like Communicating Safety: English as a Second Language Health and Safety Training Materials. As we glide into the weekend, here are a few more resources shared by MCN staff on the topics of migrant health and health justice. We hope you find these interesting and useful. Have a safe and healthy weekend.
Alma, Senior Program Manager, forwarded on the NPR piece, “Childhood Trauma And Its Lifelong Health Effects More Prevalent Among Minorities.”
On the anniversary of Hurricane Maria, Alma also shared “The Maria Generation': Young people are dying and suffering on an island with a highly uncertain future.”
Jillian, Director of Education and Communication, reminded us that the Social Determinants of Health Academy is launching new learning collaboratives.
Amy also shared, “Migrant child died after release from detention, attorneys group alleges.”
Amy, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health, shared “With more immigrant children in detention, HHS cuts funds for other programs — like cancer research.”
News got you down? Jillian offered an end-of-the-week uplifter: “Meet the Puerto Rican sisterhood reinventing the island's future after Maria.”
Have a safe and healthy weekend.
