Let’s admit it: This week was tough. Migration health continues to dominate the news cycle, with border health, public charge, and racism at the forefront. Our Five on Friday this week, composed of recommended reads from MCN staff, covers some of these concerns -- but we know there’s good news out there, too. That’s why we’ve doubled this week’s Weekly Win, bringing you two positive stories to end the work week. Enjoy your weekend.
Karen shared the Washington Post opinion piece, “ICE sweeps are cruel. Without immigration reform, they’re pointless, too.”
Amy sent “White Nationalists Discover the Environment,” as if the climate change discussion needed more complications.
Alma in Massachusetts shared a perspective piece entitled, “Why we should let more foreign doctors practice in America.”
Amy also shared, “Migrant child died after release from detention, attorneys group alleges.”
Claire sent the American Academy of Pediatrics’ new statement on the effects of racism on children’s health.
Weekly Win: Deliana shared the good news that the California EPA took first steps this week toward a ban of chlorpyrifos: “Trump defended a pesticide linked to developmental disorders. California will ban it.”
Bonus Weekly Win: Amy shared this Washington Post analysis of three new polls that show that the US public still has largely positive views of immigrants. There is even a growing portion saying we should accept Central American refugees: “The Daily 202: New polls identify fault lines inside the GOP over Trump’s immigration agenda and treatment of asylum seekers.”
Have a safe and healthy weekend.
