In many parts of the flood-hit Midwest, farmers are still waiting for soil to dry out to plant. In California, an unusual late-season storm brought winter rain to summer crops that typically rely only on irrigation. It seems most of the country is experienced strange weather, and such fluctuations affect farmworkers, who haven’t arrived in some areas, which in turn affect the many outreach and mobile health programs that are scheduled to assist workers as they arrive at farms. How has this year’s farm season progressed in your region? Tell us your story by emailing chutkins-seda@migrantclinician.org. While weather and farming shift with the seasons, here’s one thing that is consistent: our Five on Friday series. Every Friday, we share five pieces we find relevant to our work -- articles, publications, podcasts, videos, and more. Here are this week’s picks.
Alma sent around “Protecting Farmworker Children from Environmental Contaminants,” a blog post from East Coast Migrant Head Start that highlights Migrant Clinicians Network’s collaboration with them.
Theressa shared the National Immigrant Law Center’s article, “Trump Demands Border Wall in the Face of Evidence Documenting Harms to Migrants, Border Communities, and the Environment.”
Jillian shared “Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemic May Be Result of High Heat, Toxins,” which summarizes a new research article in the New England Journal of Medicine. (An article on the same topic is available in Spanish: “El cambio climático y las toxinas matan a miles de trabajadores en el mundo.”)
Amy also shared, “Migrant child died after release from detention, attorneys group alleges.”
Nestor shared one of his favorite artist’s powerful new music video, “I Found You / Nilda's Story,” by Benny Blanco, Calvin Harris, and Miguel.
Del shared the Marshall Project’s new analysis, rich with graphs: “Is There a Connection Between Undocumented Immigrants and Crime?”
Have a safe and healthy weekend.
