Friday has arrived! Here are five articles shared by MCN staff this week, that perhaps you have missed.

Amy shared "Social Determinants of COVID-19 Mortality at the County Level.” The researchers’ findings suggest that “farmworkers may face unique risks of COVID-19 beyond issues of language, insurance, or economics, and that while their unique risk can be seen in higher absolute numbers of deaths, more farm workers in a county is not a major contributor to epidemic spread. Our finding that a higher percentage of non-English speaking households in a county is associated with a higher rate of deaths per 100,000 individuals does suggest that individuals who do not speak English may be at particularly high risk.” 

Del shared a new publication from the Economic Policy Institute, “Why the US Needs a $15 Minimum Wage,” which features this graphic to remind us who actually gets minimum wage.

Kaethe also shared an AP News article reporting out of the deserts of California, but relevant to much of the country: “Language Barriers, Wariness Make Vaccinating Immigrants Hard.”

Weekly Win: A new special enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) exchanges is coming soon! “As we continue to battle COVID-19, it is even more critical that Americans have meaningful access to affordable care," said the White House as reported in, “Biden to Implement Special ACA Enrollment Period Amid Pandemic.”
