Health Literacy 101

Printer-friendly version

The National Center for Farmworker Health (NCFH) is pleased to present the following webinar. This complimentary webinar is for the staff of migrant/community health centers and other non-profit organizations working directly with migrant and seasonal agricultural workers only.

Over 90 million adults are affected by low health literacy and are considered at a basic or below basic level. At this alarming number, we can only imagine how low health literacy is affecting the well-being and health of our patients. During this 1-hour introductory webinar, participants will learn the definition of health literacy, risk factors, indicators or red flags of how to identify if a patient is experiencing low literacy, and examples of how patients compensate for their low literacy capabilities. The presenter will also discuss strategies to apply verbal and written communication methods with their patients in order to convey important health messages. This Health Literacy webinar will address the following objectives:

  • Describe the scope of the health literacy problem and risk factors for limited literacy.
  • Explain the impact on patient health outcomes.
  • Identify behaviors and clues that may indicate limited health literacy.

Identify verbal and written communication strategies to bridge barriers in the healthcare setting.
