Myrellis Muñiz-Márquez

Myrellis Muñiz-Márquez (they/them/elle, she/her/ella, he/him/él) is Migrant Clinicians Network’s Program Manager in Puerto Rico, where they advocate for health promotion, health equity, and emergency preparedness. In this role, they manage and develop ongoing and new projects that seek to attend to the health needs of the vulnerable communities in Puerto Rico by providing training, resources, and other literacy opportunities. Muñiz-Márquez has previously worked as a study coordinator and research assistant in disaster health effects related to prenatal maternal stress caused by Hurricane Maria, orofacial malformations, and community risk communication in vector-borne diseases. Through their work with MCN, they aim to improve the quality and access to health services for underserved populations and minorities, with emphasis on gender-based violence victims, and the LGBTTQIA+ community, and to help remedy emerging public health issues in the island.

Muñiz-Márquez was born and raised in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico. Their passion for social justice was a fundamental lesson from her mother, a primary school math teacher who serves her community now outside of the classroom. They graduated from the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus with a master’s degree in Public Health and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico Humacao Campus. Outside of MCN, Muñiz-Márquez can be found connecting with nature, reasearching and relearning history, and seeking ways to heighten and bring awareness of their African and indigenous ancestry.
