MCN’s Salisbury, MD office has an opportunity for an intern to assist in special projects and research related to the Environmental and Occupational Health (EOH) program. The EOH program works to assist frontline providers to integrate EOH practices into primary care to meet the unique healthcare needs of migrant patients. MCN’s EOH efforts involve the development and distribution of clinical and patient education resources, training of clinicians and stakeholders, advocating for environmental justice for migrant and seasonal farmworkers.
This opportunity will provide prospective intern candidates with an introduction to the fields of migrant health, environmental health, occupational health and safety, public health and public policy. The intern will develop an understanding of the unique environmental and occupational health risks migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their children encounter both in the workplace and at home. The intern will also learn about topics related to migration, environmental justice, culturally appropriate popular education, worker protections and labor policy, pesticides (exposures and health risks), and agricultural health and safety.
Internship activities can vary based on academic major and skills of the candidate, though interns may participate in a combination of the following activities:
- Update and analyze data for web-based interactive tools.
- Research and catalog recent literature and public data related to pesticide exposure, occupational injury, community health workers (promotores de salud) and other topics related to EOH and migrant and seasonal farmworkers.
- Assist in the evaluation and/ or distribution of patient education materials.
- Draft brief articles for MCN’s monthly e-newsletter.
- Draft announcements for MCN’s website (www.migrantclinician.org)
- Translate documents and e-communication to Spanish.
- Assist in the development of web-based educational tools for clinicians and stakeholders
- Participate in webinars and other workshops to learn about issues related to migrant health
At the beginning of the internship experience, the intern and the Environmental and Occupational Health Program Associate will outline a set of professional and organizational goals to ensure the internship experience meets the professional and academic needs of the student.
Requirements: A passion for MCN’s mission – to be a force for health justice for the mobile poor – and our organizational values; prior research experience; prior work with, or related to underserved populations; Spanish language proficiency (preferred, but not required).
