Happy Friday! Here are a few interesting pieces to keep us up-to-date in the world of migrant health, as recommended by staff at MCN.
Amy, MCN’s Director of Environmental and Occupational Health, sent a New York Times article about a Washington based federal judge who ordered to suspend the practice of detaining women and children crossing the border illegally: “This is an incredibly important decisions for immigrants, many of whom are fleeing violence.”
Lots of MCN press coverage in the last few weeks:
- Jennie, Specialist in Child and Migrant Health and Bioethics was quoted in a Seattle Times article on the birth defect, anencephaly, and its scary spike in Washington State.
- Amy, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health, published an op-ed about a pesticide poisoning in Washington State.
From Karen, CEO: The fiscal cliff is returning -- and the health center program is on the chopping block. It’s slated to be cut by 70%, endangering essential health care pieces that improve access and care for migrant patients like outreach programs, integration of occupational and environmental health into primary care, and programs that battle issues like transportation, language differences, and more. Stay tuned for more MCN communication on this issue.
From Charlotte, Development Coordinator: “For those who want to remain informed about the president's executive action to expand DACA and institute DAPA, here is a link to the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) summary of the Texas court’s decision to block expanded DACA and DAPA.” Charlotte also shared a PSA called Free Killer Tan: “ It's very short and worth watching - a great example of effective advocacy on a health issue.”
Ricardo, Health Network Manager, tried out the CDC’s latent TB infection app for health care providers: “It has been interesting to review the content, structure, and comments.” He also recommends a news alert from the Stop TB Partnership.
