MCN’s Board of Directors joined the entire MCN staff for a high-energy, joyful, yet focused multi-day strategic planning retreat in Austin, Texas earlier this week. Rosemary Sokas, MD, MOH, Board Chair, and her team of enthusiastic and engaged board members, Hugo Lopez–Gatell, MD, MSc, PhD, Kristine McVea, MD, MPH, Robert Moore, MD, MPH, Gayle Thomas, MD, and Vicki Thuesen, APRN, lent their expertise and perspective on the direction of MCN, joining staff members from Austin, Washington State, New York State, Maryland, and California.
“I think our 2016 retreat was the best one yet,” said MCN’s CEO, Karen Mountain, MBA, MSN, RN. “I am honored to be among such smart and passionate people. I have good work to do and great people to do it with.”
Throughout the retreat, the staff and board exhibited incredible dedication and a light-hearted spirit, while earnestly striving to make MCN the most efficient and effective as we work for health justice.
All levels of staff participated -- including brand-new Health Network Associate, Rob, whose first day at MCN was at the retreat! (What a welcome!) On the final day of the retreat, we said our goodbyes and sent heartfelt appreciation to Kris, who after seven years on the board, including four years as board chair, will be stepping off later this year.
We came out of the retreat with a detailed workplan of tactical actions for the year ahead, a clear shared vision for our long-term future, and a renewed commitment to our work in health justice for the mobile poor. Adelante!

Some Highlights
It was an honor to participate in developing the operational plan for the year. Three highlights:On a discussion of Health Advocacy Priorities, Kris McVea saying, "Children should never be incarcerated for their immigration status. Never.""Are you breaking up with us?" The question for facilitator extraordinaire Eric Ryan, noted that he is open to having an outside analysis of the organization's structure. (No breakup is anticipated).A lively discussion about options for expanding Health Networks into some Children's Health issues: following up on developmental issues and treatment of high lead levels.
