Labor Day Weekend caps off National Labor Rights Week, which coincided this year with the 50th anniversary of UFW’s march on the Texas Capitol. Thank you to the migrant laborers across the country -- farmworkers, custodians, construction workers -- who are often overlooked during our Labor Day festivities but make up an essential part of our economy and our culture. Here are a few articles that were recommended by MCN staff this week. Enjoy your three-day weekend!
- Amy, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health, forwarded on this article on yellow fever.
- Del, Director of International Projects, Research, and Development, recommends this new article in Emerging Infectious Diseases on treatment for patients with XDR-TB and HIV co-infection.
- Del also sent along the newest MMWR on the Evaluation and Management of Infants with Possible Congenital Zika Virus Infection.
- Ileana, Senior Advisor for Scientific and Strategic Planning, shared this article on the $2.25 million fine levied on Broetje Orchards LLC in Washington for hiring workers without authorization to work. Another local grower said, “They do this out of a love of all people, regardless of their legal status.”
- Candace, Specialist in Clinical Systems and Women’s Health, found this interesting article: Johns Hopkins study finds prisons contribute to spread of HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis.
Have a safe and healthy weekend!
