Happy Father’s Day! This Sunday, skip the new barbecue tools and cologne, and give the father in your life the gift of health. Go for a family day hike, swim some laps in the local community pool, or enjoy a heart-healthy vegetable-rich picnic lunch. Heart disease is the number one killer of men in the US regardless of race or ethnicity, and diet and exercise can prevent it. Among men facing vulnerabilities and barriers like agricultural workers, additional factors (food deserts, pesticide exposure, lack of safe neighborhoods for exercising, exhaustion from work) can make heart-healthy habits much more difficult to implement. Help your patients and the men in your life facing such barriers to reduce the obstacles to avoid cardiovascular disease.
