October is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. In detention, many women are not getting the health care treatment they need. That includes mental health services. In a recent Huffington Post article on the Karnes detention facility, the director of family detention services from RAICES says, “We’ve heard so many women talk to us about wanting to kill themselves. It’s only a matter of time before someone dies at Karnes.” Clinicians around the country serve patients who have recently migrated and may be saddled with grief, anxiety, depression, and toxic stress from pre-, peri- and post-migration trauma. Visit our behavioral health page to learn more about migrants and mental health, and discover new resources to help you in the exam room. On to Five on Friday, with five reading recommendations from MCN staff.
