It's Friday!! MCN staff have been busy sharing articles with each other this week and we have selected a few to share with you.
Kaethe shared this New York Times article with us, Supreme Court Rules Against Union Recruiting on California Farms. The article discusses the Supreme Court decision, made on Wednesday, which limits the power of unions on California farms.
Western heat wave threatens health in vulnerable communities, also shared by Kaethe, overviews the intense heat waves which have put vulnerable populations at increased risk for heat-related illness.
This NPR report, Food Insecurity Among Hispanic Families Surged During Pandemic, Report Finds, provides updates on the increased stress on resources the pandemic has caused for Hispanic families, including immigrant families. The report explains the pandemic has only added to the continual food insecurity many vulnerable populations suffer with which result from factors in the U.S. that cause unequal access to resources.
Giovanni shared A Team of Refugees Had a Plan to Fight COVID-19 in Georgia’s Most Diverse County. It’s Working, which overviews the work a refugee group has been doing to increase accessibility to COVID-19 vaccines and decrease COVID-19 rates in their community. Among other forms of assistance, their organization provides wrap-around services to vulnerable populations, helping to lessen the impact of COVID-19.
Weekly Win: For our weekly win we want to congratulate the Director of MCN’s Witness to Witness Program, Kaethe Weingarten, Ph.D., for her and her colleague's article being selected as the 2020 Article of the Year by the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy. Their article, Standing and Responding in Solidarity with Disenfranchised Immigrant Families in the United States: An Ongoing Call for Action, is intended to be a call to action for mental health professionals to address the various environments immigrants have been facing within the U.S.
Have a safe and healthy weekend!
