Fotonovelas: An Effective HIV/AIDS Education Tool for Rural Latino Communities

Printer-friendly version

Creating culturally competent prevention education materials is a challenging task, but it is needed to ensure community members' self-identification of risk and adoption of healthy behaviors. Poder Sano, an initiative of Farmworker Justice, invites you to join a dynamic one-hour “talk show” featuring Rural Women's Health Project (RWHP) from Gainesville, FL as they discuss their experience with fotonovelas, a type of prevention education material.

In this webinar, we will address the qualities of effective fotonovelas and how they serve as a vital tool in the prevention of HIV/AIDS in rural Latino communities.

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • explain what a fotonovela is and how it is created;
  • list 3 ways that promotores de salud can effectively use fotonovelas in their HIV/AIDS outreach work;
  • discuss the pros and cons of using fotonovelas; and,
  • explain how fotonovelas can be adapted to particular communities.
