SESSION GOALS
Nurses play an important role as members of the multidisciplinary research team; they help to address challenges associated with translating basic research (from the bench) to clinical practice (at the bedside).  Although nurses have always been involved in direct care of human subjects, the role of nurses in research required further clarification.  The presenter will provide an historical overview of clinical research nursing and describe a recent role delineation study which helped define Clinical Research Nursing Practice.  A five dimensional model of Clinical Research Nursing Practice which includes:  (1) Clinical Practice, (2) Study Management, (3) Care Coordination and Continuity, (4) Contributing to Science, and (5) Human Subjects Protection will be discussed.  Future research for Clinical Research Nursing (CRN) as a specialty within nursing practice will be discussed.
