MCN Five on Friday

We’re sledding down into colder days! As we ease into the holiday season, I can’t help but think of the millions of people who aren’t with their families as they migrate for work, for safety, for the promise of a better life. This year, more migrants are attempting dangerous journeys across borders both in the US and in Europe, despite the onset of colder and less predictable weather, which usually signals a decline in attempted migrations. Headlines covering both US and European migrations are using the term “surge” to describe the recent influx of immigrants. It’s evidence that our work is more relevant than ever, in the midst of so much change -- political, climate, economic, social -- and, despite the approach of the holidays, we are fighting harder than ever. Here are some of the pieces that MCN staff read this week, that helped us in our work. What did you read that inspired you in the fight for health justice? What resources did you find helpful this week?

  1. Candace, Specialist in Clinical Systems and Women’s Health, sent a piece from Cornell on explaining “planetary health” and why it’s challenging at times to consider our future not as rosy as the present, health-wise: “We have been mortgaging the health of future generations in order to realize economic and development gains in the present.” Check out (and share!) their concise infographic

  2. Corey, Communications and Graphics Designer, offered “Immigrant families released from detention overwhelm local aid workers,” from San Antonio Express-News.

  3. Karen, CEO, sent along a message from NACHC’s CEO, Tom Van Coverden, on the four action steps for Health Centers and their Advocates can take to “ensure our advocacy efforts are engaged, informed, prepared and effective.”

  4. Ed, Chief Medical Officer, shared a blog post written by Bill Gates on the need for more funding for TB elimination.

  5. Claire, Writer & Editor, sparked a bit of conversation around a VICE article on migrant sheepherders with H2-A visas

Have a safe and healthy weekend.
