As we begin the countdown to the end of the year, we at Migrant Clinicians Network are celebrating the good work we have completed this year -- and we’re already revving up for a very busy and lively 2017. Support our work: please give to MCN this month. Your year-end donations make a big difference to ensure that we can get our work done! Thank you for all of your support. Without further ado, here are the top five reads from MCN staff this week.
- Amy sent this stellar Atlantic article, “Environmentalism Was Once a Social-Justice Movement,” saying: “An important reminder of the historic linkages of social justice and environmentalism and food for thought as we move forward.”
- Ricardo, Health Network Manager, sent out an interesting read on the history and the future of migrants, entitled: “A philosophy professor says inequality between citizens and migrants is at a historical breaking point.”
- Candace: “Today, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell announced over $50 million in funding for 75 health centers in 23 states, Puerto Rico and the Federated State of Micronesia.”
- Claire, Writer and Editor, shared this Guardian article on how climate change is a global security threat. From the article: “The generals said the impacts of climate change were already factors in the conflicts driving a current crisis of migration into Europe, having been linked to the Arab Spring, the war in Syria and the Boko Haram terrorist insurgency.”
- And finally, resources for your holiday feasts:Ileana, Senior Advisor for Scientific and Strategic Planning, shared the National Diabetes Education Program’s resources on how to eat during the holidays for diabetics, tailored to different food cultures. The resource for Southeast Asian Americans reminds you to go easy on the Chinese roasted pork, Peking duck, or pig’s feet, whereas the page for Filipino Americans advises you to limit paella, lechon, chicken relleno, ham, or pancit.
Thank you for your ongoing support. We wish you safety and good health over the holidays.
