Happy New Year to our MCN supporters! At MCN offices across the country, we’re bundling up to keep the December chill out. Our thoughts quickly turn to those who live in homes that can’t keep the wind out -- and to those who don’t have homes at all. As clinicians, we recognize that such circumstances affect health. This week’s Five on Friday showcases how many circumstances affect the health of underserved populations, from lead paint, to extreme weather events like hurricanes, to immigration policy.
- Amy, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health sent out “The thousands of U.S. locales where lead poisoning is worse than in Flint.”
- Amy says this piece, offered up by the Center for Public Integrity, “takes a look at immigration policy and players,” using history and a look forward at possible changes under the Trump Administration
- Jessica, Grant Writer: “Illinois has put into effect a new law that requires salon workers to have training in Domestic and Sexual Assault so they can recognize the signs in clients and offer resources. I think this is really cool and a very out-of-the-box approach to dealing with this issue.”
- Candace, Specialist in Clinical Systems and Women’s Health,: Fear of increase of neglected tropical diseases like Lymphatic filariasis in Haiti, post-Hurricane Matthew.
- Ricardo, Health Network Manager, shared the LA Times piece on the change of demographics on the Mexico side of the border, where Asians, Africans, and Haitians have been arriving.
We wish you a safe and healthy 2017!
