DESCRIPTION:
Pertussis, commonly known as “whooping cough” for the distinctive sound of the cough that it produces, has been at the forefront of the conversation around immunizations in the United States. During 2012, increased pertussis cases or outbreaks were reported in a majority of states. As of January 10, 2013, 49 states and Washington, D.C. reported increases in disease in 2012 compared with 2011. This webinar, presented by Stacey Martin, MSc with the Division of Bacterial Disease of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, will provide background on pertussis, including clinical course, key features, and spectrum of illness in infants, children, adolescents and adults. The session will include an overview of pertussis diagnostics including recent findings from pseudo-outbreaks. The presenter will discuss emerging epidemiology and results from studies looking at vaccine impact and potential waning of immunity and address vaccine recommendations for infants, children, teens and adults as well as recommendations to protect young infants too young to be vaccinated. The session will provide an overview of materials available from CDC’s website for both clinicians and patients.
