Addressing Structural Vulnerabilities in Healthcare for Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Workers

The notion of structural vulnerability addresses the challenges of caring for individual patients within the large context of power hierarchies, institutional barriers and economic inequalities. Rooted in teh concept of social determinants of health, understanding structural vulnerablities allows medical students and clinicians to more clearly and critically confront the social structures that make people sick. Migrant and seasonal agricultural workers operate within the cross-section of a number of structural vulnerabilities.

WEBINAR | Manejo del paciente con hipertensión durante emergencias: experiencia de Puerto Rico durante y despues del huracán María

Durante la sesión el Dr. Rodriguez compartirá su experiencia como director médico del Hospital General Castañer, un Centro de Salud en las montañas de Puerto Rico, durante y después del Huracán María.  Describirá las estrategias básicas de manejo y control con pacientes hipertensos y otras enfermedades cronicas y como tuvieron que adaptar dichas estrategias después de la tormenta.  Con casos verídicos ejemplificará los retos que enfrentaron y las formas en que buscan superarlos, para que la audiencia pueda vislumbrar las lecciones aprendidas.

Webinar: Improving Patient Adherence with Cost of Care Conversations

In this presentation, MCN will discuss a unique project examining the cost of care conversation’s structure, to see what content elements are actually delivered during the medical encounter versus what is recalled by the patients. The presentation will include a comparison of the effectiveness of the trained sub-groups (intervened) and the usual care (non-intervened) study groups. Long-term outcomes regarding the patient’s adherence to the care plan, and their reason for non-adherence, will also be discussed. Register here.

More than two-thirds of emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic (transmitted between animals and humans) in origin, and animal agricultural workers can be on the “front lines” of a zoonotic disease outbreak.
